Adding Meta Tags and Key Words to your Blog script!

OK. So you've started blogging and you're getting a trickle of visitors to your account. This is a good thing, keep posting quality content oriented blogs on a consistent basis.

Remember, you've committed to blogging in the short term for long term benefits. You want to keep in mind that your blog gains credibility and leverage as you continually produce content oriented post that people want to read and can information from.  Of course it is important that you expand your horizons when looking to increase blog traffic. One way to do so is to include key words to your blog.

What are Meta Tags

Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the "header" page of your Blogger HTML page that makes it easier for search engines to find your blog. Now before you recoil in terror at the though of placing HTML into your code script page, not to worry. It's not that difficult, if you pay attention to what you're doing and there are many descriptive blogs available to assist you even if you haven't had a day of HTML experience.

Why use Meta Tags

Search engines use "bots" to scan sites to find relevant resources whenever a person initiates a "search" through a search portal. At one time their use was quite prevalent, but these days they are mostly used to help resent website page information in a more readable format. Google uses "Google Bot" and others use their own programs to "crawl" your site for relevant information to a specific searched topic. For instance, if a person wants to search "garden hose", the "bot" will scan all of the relevant sites to find relevant sites. It's important to remember that the "bots" do not search your title but rather they communicate with the HTML code that supports your text document.

As I've already stated, you can find many sites with insertion scripts to change your Blogger meta tags. Blogger Blogging Tips gives a thorough and clear description of this process and walks you through accessing your HTML script

1. Clicking the TEMPLATE bar to the left of your Blogger control panel.
2. Clicking the Edit HTML bar under your full site snapshot.
3. They recommend that you make a backup of your original script. I just copied the information that I intended to change within the script. Your choice.
4, Add your descriptive code to the HTML template.
5, Make sure that you add your script AFTER THIS CODE:

               <b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

I would recommend that you copy the steps and start your own web file to save any helpful tips that you need to help make your blogging a pleasant experience.

Just a thought on this, you can purchase software bots that will help find key words from other peoples websites, however, be aware that Google can and have removed people's websites from their listings for using such software.

Meta Tags vs Key Words

As stated earlier, meta tags are no longer used to improve a website's ranking, but help with page readings. Search portals such as Google, Yahoo and Bing now use key words and specifically the "key word phrase" for page ranking and the "key word phrase" that you add to your HTML script will be used as a sub-title on the search portals listing of your web-site or blog.

Here is another script that you can use when changing your meta tags and key words in the HTML script. I prefer this one that comes from Stuffskeleton[Dot]com because it's both clearer and simpler to use than others that I've run into.

Remember place your code after this script.
<b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

<meta content='BLOG DESCRIPTION HERE' name='description'/>
<meta content='BLOG KEYWORDS HERE' name='keywords'/>
<meta content='BLOG AUTHOR NAME HERE' name='author'/>

Make Changes:
1.Change 'BLOG DESCRIPTION HERE' with your Blog Description.
2.Change 'BLOG KEYWORDS HEREwith your blog  keywords
3.Change 'BLOG AUTHOR NAME HERE' with your name.

Blog Description

Remember that your Blog Description will serve as a subtitle to your Blog Title on the search engine listing. It shouldn't be much longer than 60 characters and Blogger has a limit of how many characters you can actually enter.
Key Words - Short or Long Tail Words

Short tail words are simply single key words that apply to your blog subject. Using the prior example, if you're blogging on garden hoses, you key words could be things like "garden, hose, hose length etc".  Vertical Response identifies Long tailed as key phrases of 3 to 5 words that are descriptive of your blog content.  Differentiating them from short tailed keywords, a long tailed word would look like "different types of garden hoses, picking the best garden hose, cost listings for garden hoses, etc". The idea is that rather than picking a general one or two word search item you focus on a more descriptive search pattern by specifying a more detail phrase to match more specialized search attempts.  List your short or long tailed words with commas after each and no spaces afterwards: for example.

'garden hoses,types of garden hoses,cost of garden hoses'

Blog Author Name

Whatever name that you choose to associate with your blog should be listed here and will accompany your blog in the search listing.

It's important to remember that you'll need to change your blog description, meta tags and key words for every new blog entry with a different subject heading.  Be sure to save your changes and close out the HTML script page when your finished.  Below is a video produced by Google Webmasters on meta tags, meta descriptions (key words).
